Mission

The School Council was created as a consultative body within the school community to support and consult the school Principal. The nature of the Council as a “consultant to the Principal “ calls for it to assist the Principal by giving advice, and, as required, by formulating school policies. Such policies are officially enacted by the Pastor and implemented by the Principal. The Principal consults with the Council in six areas of its responsibility. These include:

  1. Mission and Philosophy
  2. Policy Development
  3. Planning (“strategic” or “long range”)
  4. Finances (budget, tuition-setting)
  5. Advancement (fundraising, publicity, enrollment)
  6. Facilities and Plant

The council does not consult the Principal in such matters of curriculum, personnel, and the administration of the school.

Current Areas of Focus—WASC Audit

In 2010, St John School, SJS, received an accreditation audit from the Western Association of School and Colleges--WASC audit. In this audit, SJS was given 6 target areas that needed to be addressed. The 6 areas are as follows:

  • Target Area 1. Continued expansion of Technology Department for enhancement of integrated and differential instructions utilizing SMART board lessons, components and current computer hardware and software.
  • Target Area 2. The facility will continue to differentiate instructions in all areas of the curriculum to better meet the needs of each student
  • Target Area 3. Develop plan to improve the religious aspect of parental involvement in the school and parish
  • Target Area 4. Develop marketing and public relations plan to increase and sustain enrollment
  1. Enrollment Management Plan
  • Target Area 5. The administration needs to consolidate and organize the vision plan and the five year plan with short and long term goals into one document, overseen by sub-committees of the school Council under the guidance of the pastor and Principal.
  • Target Area 6. The administration need to consider the three safety concerns:
  1. Exit safety routes need to be posted in every room at every exit door
  2. Dismissal on the streets needs increased supervision and safety protocols
  3. Easy access to the playground from the church building needs to be remedied

In 2010, the Council started to address these target areas with the goal of finding a resolution or assigning the responsibility for each item to the school community.
